Alzheimer's and Heart Disease ? The Connection … – Focus on health

canker sores What do

, bone spurs or chest pain reveal about your susceptibility to Alzheimer?s or heart disease?

Curiously, each condition seems to be connected.

Forty-plus years of research suggest that the Relatively minor conditions pulsate the warning that your tissues are dry kindling for fire of Alzheimer?s or heart disease, if not a who?s who list of chronic degenerative conditions, including: arthritis, gout, diabetes, non-healing wounds, psoriasis , multiple sclerosis (MS), and even cancer.

You?re not alone. The ills of chronic everyone lava bubbles under the crust of apparent good health in just about. The leading cause of death, they?re not to be taken, lightly. Fortunately, something can be done to reverse them or preventable.

Forty years ago, when cardiologist, Kurt A. Oster, MD, and Fairfield University professor, Donald J. Ross, Ph.D., began their study of atherosclerosis by examining the initial injury to the artery lining, they discovered in enzymes, XO, worming Swiss cheese holes within it, making sections affected a garden hose brittle prone to leaks.

Noting that the composition of arteries is similar to the myelin coating of nerves, to connective tissue under the skin, and to brain tissue, they realized that each tissue is so vulnerable to the action of XO. It led to

of understanding of Considerable Consequence.

Easter and Ross Concluded that inflammation introduces xanthine oxidase (XO), and that the enzyme is involved in a nearly identical, cascade of events at the start of each chronic illness. In other words, nearly the same disease process in various tissues and organs OCCURS yet each condition is assigned a different name according to the nature and to the locale where symptoms become manifest. The two researchers published the hypothesis that ?a multitude of apparently unrelated diseases may actually be only one many-faceted disease.? 1.2

In the last two decades, investigators at the cutting edge of research in inflammation dozens of institutes, worldwide, have Largely validated the thesis that inflammation is the common denominator of virtually all chronic degenerative diseases. Inflammation has become the focus of intense study.

And the word is getting out. The significance of inflammation at the start of all chronic degenerative diseases has propelled the subject to the cover of Time magazine (Feb. 23, 2004). A look at Ground Zero of Chronic Illnesses,

Easter Ross and advanced the thesis that internal inflammation is Characterized by the activation of the bee venom-like enzymes, PLA2, calcium triggered by stress and hormones. The action of PLA2 on the fat component of cell membranes, they pointed out, frees up space for XO to move in and complete the digestion of the fat component. In other words, it?s a two-phase, ignition process, starting with what amounts to the fire insulation within a cell membrane being stripped, followed by the spark of XO igniting the cell.

Digging deeper, after XO torches the fat component of cell membranes, fire alarms are sounded and chaos ensues on the cellular level, with inflammation signals apparently reaching distant parts of the body, where they resonate in different ways. In the brain, inflammation may resonate as a headache. In any event, do not burn cleanly tissues. A smoky fire rates generated free radical byproducts. Cigarette smoke also produce free radicals and sunlight but nowhere near as many as XO.3 A chain reaction of cell death ensues, nitrites and sulfites from accelerated by commonly consumed, preserved foods and drinks. Lesions are created when damage outpaces repair. When outpace healing lesions, oxidative stress to a tissue to interfere with the diagnosis is then made function.4 A ? diabetes, arthritis, lupus and the like. The name of the disease depends, most often, on where XO nests up

?Link Between Heart Disease, Alzheimer?s,? is a story aired on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, (January 14, 2004) . In it, reporter John McKenzie investigates evidence of an apparent connection between the two

The Broadcast Focuses on observations made by a scientist Whose job is to deter mine the cause of death in deceased persons as well as the timing. ? when death occurred ? by staining and analyzing relevant tissues under the microscope. Comparing brain artery and slides, he makes a noteworthy finding. Quoting from the transcript:

?While working in the Kentucky medical examiner?s office, Larry Sparks was checking brain tissues looking for early signs of Alzheimer?s disease.?

?He noticed that those who had the telltale plaques of Alzheimer?s had one thing in common:

?I took the slides ? and put them into two piles, those with heart disease and those without heart disease plaques and tangles And all the. showed up in the pile with heart disease, ?said Sparks.? 5

The information represents yet another cog in the thesis that Alzheimer?s, heart disease and other chronic conditions are the same illness in different locations.

-Reassessing Traditional Theory and Taking Charge of Health

Curiously enough, the ranks of a new generation XO investigating include a good number who have never heard of Easter Ross and yet their latest findings dovetail with those made by the two pioneers.

Independent confirmations are powerful testimony in science.

After decades of advice to lower cholesterol and saturated fat, to epidemic of chronic degenerative diseases epidemic is Maiming society like cannon-fire at close range. An out-of-control health situation is raising questions.

?Might it be that the nutritional advice has been wrong, all along? Might it be that it is the cause of the train wreck in health??

Considering the rather abysmal record of the medical-pharmaceutical industry in reversing chronic illness, ordinary folks are starting to take charge of their health by reading up, by getting second opinions and by making educated choices.

pioneering days, self-sufficiency was synonymous with survival. Curiously, it?s no less true with respect to health, today.

However, the sheer volume of information plus separating fact from fiction is no ordinary task for persons without a science background. How does one find a nugget of truth when a health responses weigh down the search screen million, along with one?s patience? As an aspiring author and researcher, I happened to stumble upon a gold nugget after taking the first step, about 30 years ago. The information became the title: ?Homogenized Milk and Atherosclerosis.? Nearly, 1 million copies were printed.6

True, numbers do not always correlate to substance but walls of shoeboxes bulging with letters of gratitude suggest that it was not just the cover that readers came to value.

Theory did what so contrarian, back then, Wikipedia is becoming mainstream, today. But it?s not a fad. They come and go. The topic of XO has begun to clog servers as fast as it has been clogging arteries. ?You see, it?s not cholesterol.?

Just tapping ?xanthine oxidase? (XO) into a search engine gives a decibel appreciation for the laboratory buzz. The rush info is tied to the finding that XO is responsible for more than just heart. ?In medical schools across the U.S. disease, cardiologists, Rheumatologists, oncologists, allergists and neurologists are all suddenly talking to one another ? and they?re discovering that they?re looking at the same thing ?7

While researchers continue to debate Whether XO originates from homogenized cow?s milk, # in which it?s plentiful, or from the human liver, it?s. not excluded that both sources are involved in chronic illness. However, cow?s milk XO is roughly 15 times more potent, apparently, the tipping point factor in overcoming the body?s defenses and anti-radical forming lesions. Cow?s milk XO is hard liquor; human XO is 2.8% beer.8

Virtually, any tissue or organ except the liver is prey to its action ? arteries, nerves, joints, skin, and the brain. Even the lens of the eye is vulnerable. Clearly, X is big.

Much like a callus or a bunion forms over a blister or layers of pearl around an irritating grain shape of sand, the body reacts to caustic XO by layering plaque around it.

The symptoms of a chronic degenerative disease can be viewed as complications resulting from cyclical episodes of XO-instigated damage and healing. Cholesterol actually contributes to the healing phase. It?s why sometimes its levels increase. The irritant, XO, remains. Plaque and resulting scars that encase it gunk that are shown to interfere with the hum of a fine-tuned organ. Illnesses ending with ?sclerosis,? like multiple sclerosis (MS) or atherosclerosis, are so named because of a thickening or hardening of a body part. The OCCURS hardening around the irritant -.. XO

Again, the name of the disease depends, simply enough, on where XO nests up For Life

plaques and tangles can not be the result of something as inert as cholesterol or fat. To blame cholesterol is like blaming Bambi for devouring a lamb. The only lions in the human system with adequate bite and a large enough appetite for tissues that pathologists see chewed up, regularly, are enzymes. XO is a digestive enzyme. When it ends up outside of the digestive system, it starts to digest body parts instead of food

In the title, Something Called XO, the novel thesis is advanced that canker sores -. Those little, whitish sores in the mouth ? are so XO-instigated lesions but without attendant plaque, scars or organ meltdown.9

Such is the bite into the bad news

The Nobel laureate good news is that one. means that each disease pathway condition ? more than 50 of them ? is amenable to nearly the same treatment. Oster and Ross suggested the same. A common therapy makes the discovery of XO?s role in many chronic degenerative diseases the ?. Mother lode of health breakthroughs?

canker sore flare-ups And are markers ? warning lights on the dashboard of common sense, suggesting that tissues are ripe for inflammation and that body chemistry is in need of urgent correction.

-The Proof of the Pudding is in the ORS Method

Everyone knows that Guarantees do not exist in but if one health, effective therapy could be found for reversing many diseases, it would not dramatically improve the odds for millions afflicted with incurable conditions? Many drugs for many diseases are money-makers for industry, something that might be tolerable if the drugs worked, yet they are Largely hit-or-miss, mostly miss. A single, viable therapy would certainly make them a thing of the past.

Easter?s in private practice and at St. Vincent?s / Park City Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where Easter served for 25 years as Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Chief, Section of Cardiology, Emeritus, for an additional 14 years, he transformed theory into real-life results in dog hundreds of patients by blocking the action of XO, Allowing incurable conditions to be reversed with remarkable success.

Easter is on record for having successfully treated, without surgery, non-healing leg wounds, complications of atherosclerosis and diabetes.10 Each year, 5.7 million persons in the U.S. alone, are affected by the condition, the Majority of them needlessly losing a limb amputation because of physician ignorance about alternatives.

Easter employed the vitamin folic acid as a nutritional supplement but not as a drug, in mega doses, to inhibit the activity of XO Allowing healing to outpace tissue damage. Patients were prescribed 80 mg daily. Despite well-documented results published in esteemed medical journals, along with photos and material support, the FDA has yet to catch on to Easter?s success story or, perhaps, it did catch on, opting to remain beholden to lobbyists, pampered by industry. The medical-pharmaceutical-food industry complex, after all, is no small octopus.

Drugs that inhibit XO, analyzed as allopurinol, have very nasty side-effects, making it essential to accomplish the same, naturally.

Working closely with Easter and Ross, over a seven-year period, in addition to the privilege of having their work edited, Homogenized Milk May Cause Your Heart Attack: The XO Factor, provided access to materials and personal insights that led to the formulation of an ideal solution -. a natural means to inhibit XO

It?s called the ORS method. It can be viewed as the penicillin of chronic illnesses only it?s not a drug.

Its guidelines steer persons seeking to reverse or preventable chronic illness away from foods containing XO, while inhibiting XO renegade already resident in the body. Each has its nuances degenerative disease in terms of how each one should be treated yet the general guidelines are applicable Comprising the ORS method to virtually, every chronic condition. The ORS Method not only the spark that lights Eliminates the fire in cells but it also Reduces their flammability. The nutritional guidelines do the equivalent of reducing the flammability of fire wood by soaking it in water. Thus, controlling and managing XO boils down to reworking kitchen recipes. Guidelines in the ORS method So identify nutritional supplements that activate and those that inhibit it XO. Correct, Certain commonly, vitamin and mineral supplements consumed increase XO activity can be highly Sun consuming them counterproductive. As just one example, multivitamins containing riboflavin (B2) nourish and increase the risk of XO free radical overload, especially consequential during inflammatory events. Even much-trusted vitamin C can be both of antioxidant and oxidant to understand Certain conditions, meaning that it can be healthy as well as harmful with respect to chronic illnesses. No less important, vitamin C heightens the immune response, Which is undesirable because collateral damage increases. Because of this, physicians prescribe immunosuppressant drugs to lower rather than heighten the immune response during inflammatory episodes. Without the fine-tuning that the ORS method for controlling XO provides, or attempts to reverse chronic degenerative diseases preventable by Way of diets, supplements or drugs are destined to remain as ineffective as the voodoo of a medical system struggling to redefine itself.

I have been asked why anyone should spend even just $ 20 on two eBooks when the basic information can be covered in some four pages plus one crib sheet listing what not to consume and what to consume.

Chronic degenerative diseases are serious, life-threatening conditions. There is much at stake on both sides of the equation, that is, for patients and for industry. David ended the arrogance and conceit of Goliath with one stone. The life-work of three persons has to be the stone that hits the mark. Only then can its value be appreciated. It?s why nearly 400 pages, backed by some 250 references, are needed.

I?ve now seen enough evidence to guarantee results. And, yes, the punctuation mark maligns, canker sores or bone spurs like, can be easily treated ? the same way as the long-winded like diseases, atherosclerosis

A comma and a period may be small but. they tell us much. A sentence is incomplete without them.

Edwards’ downward spiral fueled by ambition, narcissism

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In 2001, when I was a political/metro columnist for The Charlotte Observer, I had lunch with Sen. John Edwards at a Southern soul food restaurant on Tryon Street — i.e. Wall Street South — between the headquarters buildings of the twin banking colossi that defined this city. Back then, Bank of America and Wachovia were on a feeding frenzy, consuming every bank in sight, and the Observer was flush with cash, so much so that the senator and I split an appetizer before the entrees.

The crab dip was OK. Nothing special.

What I remember most about the meal, other than what a quick study Edwards was on the ways of Washington, was how the two of us went at that crab dip. Both of us. Like we didn’t know where the next meal was coming from. Granted, I’d not had breakfast, and the senator was in a hurry, but it was funny and scary in hindsight, especially considering Edwards was worth some $40 million while I was barely socking away $40 a week in Knight-Ridder’s 401(k) plan.

At the same time, that incident made me think Johnny Reid Edwards knew something of the two Americas of which he so often spoke. Both of us had come from families who struggled to make it, whose fathers worked in North Carolina textile mills. Edwards’ dad worked for a mill in Robbins; my dad worked second shift at the Osage Mill in Gastonia while going to college on the G.I. bill during the day with a wife and two babies at home.

The verdict in Edwards’ trial over alleged campaign finance violations has now been left to Greensboro jury. Today, I don’t think of him as an anti-hero who will get much sympathy from his former constituents in the Tar Heel state. In four years, Edwards has gone from presidential contender to living a life that looks straight out of “Mad Men,” with sidekick Andrew Young in the role of the slippery Pete Campbell to Edwards’ Don Draper. Most everyone in this Edwards drama — the Edwards, the Youngs, Reille Hunter, Bunny Mellon — come off as spoiled and selfish and craven, all stricken by Potomac fever — the need to make a name in politics.

No one had it worse than Edwards.

In October 2003, I spent Jefferson-Jackson weekend in Iowa covering Edwards during his first presidential run. There was a two-hour campaign bus ride with the Edwards family set up by Jennifer Palmieri, the press handler turned Elizabeth Edwards friend turned White House operative whose searing testimony represented one of the most poignant moments in the trial. I’d never met Elizabeth before that weekend, and got on the bus half complaining to her about a speeding ticket I’d just received.

Elizabeth responded apropos.

“Me, me, me,” she said. “John always reminds me that the media begins with M-E me.”

I liked her immediately, her sassy spunk, her earth-girl ease, and how she joked about being married to a man who looked 20 years younger than her. On the bus, Elizabeth talked about their decision to have two more children instead of one because they did not want one child burdened with “replacement child syndrome” to make up for the son, Wade, they lost in a car accident in 1996.

“We asked, ‘What brought joy into our lives?’ ” she said. “We agreed it was children.”

Back then, Edwards was the new “it” boy in the Democratic Party. With his Southern charm, telegenic looks and small-town story, he was the one Democrat Bush and Cheney feared in 2004. On that bus tour, Edwards downed enough Diet Cokes to kill a pack of lab rats, then he would stop and run five miles and go back to campaigning. He was an absolute robot, a megalomaniac with stamina and drive, as perfect a candidate as you could find.

Until there was nothing to campaign for. Then it all fell apart.

Last weekend marked the second Mother’s Day since Elizabeth died in December 2010, and now Elizabeth’s three children are being raised by a father who allegedly used campaign funds to hide his mistress and baby mama, Rielle Hunter. Edwards has three children younger than 14 — Emma Claire, Jack and Frances Quinn Hunter, the love child Edwards convinced Young to claim as his own. Hunter now lives in Charlotte, two miles from the site of this summer’s 2012 Democratic National Convention and four doors down from my parents.

I always figured a fling would be Edwards’ undoing. He had all the ingredients, the nascent narcissism, the vanity, the constant need for ego approval that politicians feed on like oxygen. After the 2004 campaign was over, Edwards was in no man’s land, with no political office, hustling contributors for money while trying to draw attention to his charity about two Americas. There no adoring throngs and no kids and no Elizabeth with him.

In that weak moment, in 2006, Edwards met Rielle Hunter.

Perhaps the most precise and exacting evidence of Edwards’ character is captured on the videos his mistress made. (Talk about feminine justice.) On the introductory video, Edwards is shown climbing aboard the private plane, telling her camera, “I have come to the personal conclusion that I want the country to see who I am. Who I really am. … For me personally, I’d rather be successful or unsuccessful, based on who I really am, not based on some plastic Ken Doll that you put up in front of audiences.” At one point, he instructs a crowd of Iowa teachers. “I want to see our party lead on the great moral issues. Yes, me, a Democrat, using that word.” Talk about chutzpah. And cajones. Big brass ones.

Later, he’s like a giggly school boy showing off the cursory notes to his stump speech, blushing and gushing and flirting with Hunter’s camera. He’s clearly in love. With whom? Credit Hunter this much: If Edwards wanted a videographer to capture his essence, he hired the right one.

It’s all right there on tape, a cautionary tale for anyone who assumes Icarus wings. If I could ask him one thing, I would say, “Dude, Rielle, a sex tape?”

In Edwards defense, politicians are often among the most needy and narcissistic people you’ll ever meet. They seem to think if they can tell one more little white lie, or one more whopper, or create one more attack ad, they can buy enough time to survive. Bill Clinton pulled it off; Edwards did not. Not that he didn’t try. In his “confessional” to ABC’s Bob Woodruff, once again Edwards denied the love child.

Somewhere along the way, Edwards forgot the two Americas I’m convinced he knew so well. What I remember most about our lunch on Tryon Street as much as his intellect was the hunger, the ambition that ultimately consumed him. If I know Edwards, if there is a way to remake his life after the trial, if there is an angle for redemption of his ego, a Don Draper move, Edwards will figure it out. But maybe what he should do is what he promised to do after Elizabeth died: simply become the best father he can be.

His children need him. Especially the little one here in Charlotte he for so long denied.

Messy Facebook debut marks weak day on Wall Street

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stocks fell on Friday after a sloppy debut by Facebook Inc spoiled hopes that a spectacular open for the most-anticipated stock sale in years would brighten the mood in what has been a gloomy month for equity markets.

Shares of Facebook, the social networking giant, were volatile in the busiest day ever for a trading debut. After early gains of more than 10 percent, Facebook shares fell back to the $38 issue price, ending up just 0.6 percent at $38.23.

It was the Nasdaq’s most actively traded stock, with more than 566 million shares traded.

“When Nasdaq started running into some problems early on before Facebook opened – when there was a sense they kept putting it off, putting it off, the market did come under a little bit of pressure because people were getting nervous about it,” said Ken Polcari, managing director at ICAP Equities in New York.

The S&P 500 dipped below 1,300, seen as a key support level, for the first time since mid-January. Investors were cautious before leaders of the Group of Eight nations met about the euro zone debt crisis.

After delays in the scheduled start of Facebook trading raised anxiety levels among traders and onlookers outside Nasdaq’s headquarters, the stock opened at $42.05, compared with an initial public offering price of $38 a share. It rose as high as $45 before pulling back.

Investors were left in the dark about whether their buy and sell orders on Facebook went through as the Nasdaq did not tell broker/dealers whether opening trades had been executed. Nasdaq did not disseminate execution data until 1:50 p.m. (1750 GMT).

“The fact that there is this much interest in a big capital raise, an event like this is good for the markets overall,” said Gordon Charlop, a managing director at Rosenblatt Securities in New York.

The S&P 500 fell for a sixth straight day and recorded its worst week since November on growing concerns that global growth will suffer from the euro zone’s problems and signs of a slowing U.S. recovery.

The broad index has dropped 7.3 percent so far in May.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 73.11 points, or 0.59 percent, to 12,369.38. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 9.64 points, or 0.74 percent, to 1,295.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 34.90 points, or 1.24 percent, to 2,778.79.

For the week, the Dow fell 3.5 percent, the S&P 500 declined 4.3 percent and the Nasdaq was down 5.3 percent.

Markets are awaiting the G8 meeting when leaders of the world’s major industrial economies convene near Washington this weekend.

They will confront the continuing crisis in the euro zone, including the increasing likelihood of a Greek departure from the bloc.

“Domestically we are kind of in a lull in a sense that we are between Fed periods and earnings, so to try to find direction, one of the things that seems to be jumping up at guys is macro, global. And right now that’s not wonderful,” said Charlop.

Shares of companies in the online social media sphere declined. LinkedIn fell 5.7 percent to $99.02 and Groupon Inc lost 6.7 percent to $11.70. Zynga plunged 13.4 percent to $7.16 after being halted twice during the session.

Biotechs stumbled, weighed down by an 10.9 percent drop in Sequenom Inc to $4.25 after the company said insurer Coventry Health Care Inc terminated an agreement to provide coverage for a prenatal test for Down Syndrome. The NYSEArca biotech index dropped 2.2 percent.

Shares of Foot Locker jumped 8.3 percent to $30.33 after the athletic footwear retailer posted higher-than-expected quarterly results.

Winnebago Industries Inc advanced 1.8 percent to $8.66 after receiving an unsolicited buyout offer from North Street Capital LP, the investment firm of racing car enthusiast Alex Mascioli, valuing the No. 1 U.S. motor home maker at $321.5 million.

Volume was strong with about 8.8 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, above the daily average of 6.83 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 2,297 to 728, while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers 1,791 to 699.

Sikkim Himalayas ? Road to a Rarefied World | Indulged Traveler …

by Subhasish Chakraborty

My fascination for mountains have taken me to places like Annapurna in Nepal, the Everest Base Camp also in Nepal and the imposing Sheela Pass-Tawang circuit of Arunachal Pradesh in North East of India. I have heard a lot about Sikkim, its mountains with Kanchenjunga as the guardian deity, the affable and easygoing hill people, the quintessential Sikkimese cuisine, its predominant Buddhist culture and of course the world famous Orchids. But, as luck would have it, I was unable to muster the time and the energy to embark on an exclusive mountain tour of Sikkim.

However, this time around in the month of March, I was offered an invitation by my Sikkimese friend ? Lobzang, who runs a very successful hotel business in Gangtok, the picturesque capital ?of Sikkim, to come on a leisure trip to this marvelous mountainous state in the Eastern Himalayas.

Siliguri is the gateway city to the Eastern Himalayas and we arrived at Bagdogra Airport by an early morning Jet Airways flight from Kolkata. My friend Lobzang had sent his personal vehicle (4?4 Drive) and once we finished the airport rituals, we straightaway hopped into the sturdy Scorpio. Our friendly driver ? Tenzing was of the opinion that there was likelihood of a thunderstorm that was forecast by the Met office and so we zipped, zapped and zoomed our way through the enchanting Dooars region.

We passed by Siliguri town, the gateway to the Eastern Himalayas and were captivated by the magical blend of immaculately landscaped Tea Gardens and stunning wildlife. The Siliguri-Jalpaiguri tourist circuit, though not all that developed in terms of tourist infrastructure as compared to destinations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok have over the years evoked a sense of mystery and awe with its three T?s ? Tea, Timber and Tourism.

The Climb Uphill:
The ascent from the plains of Siliguri to the high mountain terrain of Sikkim via National Highway 31A is nothing short of a fairy tale mountain ride. The four-hour drive from Siliguri to Gangtok offers spectacular window views of the Sikkimese countryside nestling besides the turquoise-blue Teesta River, your companion throughout the journey. Rhododendrons and Orchids create a riot of pink, yellow and mauve.

There are enough number of interesting mountain cafeterias and we savored some of the best ?Momos? (Tibetan Dumplings) of India along with Sikkimese wine, every time we needed a break in our Himalayan ascent.I always had this opinion that being a predominantly mountainous state, traveling within Sikkim would be an arduous and grueling affair. But all my preconceived notions were swept aside once I found myself in Gangtok ? the breathtakingly beautiful capital of Sikkim.

We checked in at the classy Sonam Delek hotel, which is located strategically in Tibet Road and Lobzang was absolutely delirious with joy as we meet after three long years. Instead of dining at his hotel, Lobzang invited us to have a traditional Sikkimese dinner at his quaint residence, which was a brisk 20 minutes drive from the hotel.

As a mountain city (1,547 meters) and with a population in access of 50,000, Gangtok has developed primarily along its arterial roads with the NH 31A being the most prominent. Most roads in Gangtok are two laned driveways and some roads have very precipitous gradients.

In Gangtok East meets West at the crossroads, with youths sporting designer jeans and Ray Ban goggles brushing shoulders with wizened ?baku? clad old timers carrying prayer wheels and chanting ?Om Mani Padma Om?.

Nathula Pass remained out of bounds since the year 1961 due to the bitter acrimony between India and China. But with the friendly overtures in the Indo-Chinese bilateral relationship in recent times, the Pass has been opened to tourists since the year 2006. A special permit is required to visit Nathula Pass.
Nathula Pass, which is all of 14,450 feet above sea level, is located at a distance of 56 Kms. from Gangtok on the Indo-Chinese border. In the days of yore, it used to be referred to as the famed ?Silk Route? that facilitated trade with Tibet.

Traveling to Nathula pass is an adventure in itself. As we embarked on our journey to the high mountains from Gangtok, the serpentine roads, turbulent waterfalls and mist-laden Himalayan peaks were our companions. The presence of the Indian Army is very palpable with Army settlements spread across the Nathula Pass and its surroundings.
The ultimate high from us was the once in lifetime?s opportunity to be photographed in the company of soldiers from the Chinese Red Army.

Already, the Ministry of Tourism is predicting a tourism boom at Nathula Pass. While it is still early days as far as package tours and mass tourism is concerned, the few who make it to the Pass are having a whale of a time pitching tents at this rarefied Himalayan zone, appreciating the hardships of border postings (Armymen), mixing up with the hardy locals and bargaining with the few shopkeepers for that prized souvenir, be it shawls, sweaters or scarves.

If you are driven by the spirit of adventure and wish to stay overnight at Nathula Pass, you should carry the logistical stuff like tents, cooking utensils and other high altitude paraphernalia, all of which were adequately provided by Hotel Sonam Delek. Take the help of the Indian Army when it comes to selection of site for pitching tents as they know the topography best.

Hired taxis and cabs are easily available at Bagdogra airport.

Accommodation:
Gangtok is choc-a-bloc with hotels to suit every budget. Hotel Norkhil, Hotel Tashi Delek, Hotel Tibet, The Chumbi Residency, Hotel Sonam Delek are some of the up-market hotels of Gangtok. They are centrally located and offer impeccable mountain hospitality. Most have a predominant Tibetan ambience. Hotel Tibet in particular is famed for its no-holds-barred Tibetan appeal. The in-house restaurants offer Chinese, Continental and Indian cuisines but try out the local Sikkemese delicacies prepared to perfection by the resident chef.

For those interested in government run accommodation, Hotel Mount Jopuno is a great place to stay and is centrally located at P.S.Road.

Permits:
In addition to an Indian visa, foreign travelers must possess an Inner Line Permit, issued by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs or New Sikkim House, both in Delhi. The permit is valid for 15 days. A visit to the interiors of Sikkim requires a Protected Area Permit, which may be obtained in Gangtok from the Department of Tourism.

Melissa Rycroft Shows Bikini Body, Talks Weight Loss (PHOTO)

We’ve followed former “Bachelor” contestant Melissa Rycroft on her journey to find love and start a family, and now she’s showing off her super-fit figure in the new issue of In Touch.

Rycroft welcomed daughter Ava with husband Tye Strickland in February 2011, and like many new moms, struggled with losing the baby weight. However, thanks to days filled with household chores and running after Ava, she’s managed to lose the 50 pounds she gained during her pregnancy.

And though she may have left her “Bachelor” days behind, Rycroft hasn’t turned her back on reality TV completely. The former Season 13 “Bachelor” and “Dancing With the Stars” contestant, as well as Strickland and baby Ava, star on the CMT reality show “Melissa & Tye,” which chronicles their lives as new parents.
